Principal founder of the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) of Washington, D.C. EPI’s president from 1985 until August 2002, when I became the Institute’s Distinguished Fellow. EPI is now America’s leading research organization on the economic conditions of workers and their families, with a global reputation for high-quality work and innovative ideas.

Newest book is The Servant Economy: Where America’s Elite is Sending the Middle Class (John Wiley & Sons, June 2012). Previous was The Global Class War (Wiley. 2006). Before that:The Party’s Not Over (Basic Books), and New Hope for the Inner City (Twentieth Century). Co-authored Rebuilding America (Pantheon), and The Star-Spangled Hustle (Doubleday), and co-edited  Reclaiming Prosperity (M.E.Sharpe).

Written for a large number of magazines, newspapers and anthologies,  lectured at universities here and abroad and  interviewed many times on television, radio and a number of documentary films.

Among other honors: Carnegie Scholar Award from the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Weinberg Award from Wayne State University, a fellowship at the Institute of Politics at Harvard, and an honorary doctorate from the University of New England.

Wide range of political and economic issues, from the global economy to neighborhood community development, from fiscal and budget policy to trade and the economics of public investment, from American’s history to it’s future. Have consulted with governments at all levels, labor unions, business, community, and citizen organizations. I sit on the boards of directors of several national institutions and two national magazines, and had a presidential appointment to the National Advisory Council on Economic Opportunity. Founder of the Global Policy Network – an international group of “think-tanks.”

Worked as economist with the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity and the U.S. Departments of State, Commerce, and Labor.. Have been a member of five different trade unions and was an junior executive in  the finance industry, a merchant seaman, a bartender, railroad worker, a blueberry farmer, and a member of a municipal planning board in the state of Maine.
